Colombo Kaps vs Kandy Royals Eliminator Prediction (05 Aug)

August 5, 2026

Author: Kavin Fernando

Colombo Kaps head into the Eliminator having beaten Kandy Royals in both of their league meetings this season, but they do so under a different captain than the one who started the campaign. Kusal Mendis was ruled out of the rest of LPL 2026 with a hamstring injury on July 19, and Kamindu Mendis has led the side to a third-place finish since taking over.

Kandy Royals arrive at the R. Premadasa Stadium as the last team to confirm their playoff spot, finishing fourth despite Lahiru Udara’s tournament-leading 384 runs. The loser of Wednesday’s game is out of the tournament, while the winner goes on to face the loser of Qualifier 1 for a place in the final.

This preview covers both squads, conditions at the R. Premadasa Stadium and our prediction for the Eliminator.

Colombo Kaps & Kandy Royals Squads for LPL 2026

Colombo Kaps go into the Eliminator with Janith Liyanage the form batter of their campaign, having struck twin half-centuries in the wins over Kandy Royals, while James Neesham has offered the finishing touch on both occasions. Ripon Mondol has been added mid-season to cover for Hasan Mahmud’s national duty commitments.

Kandy Royals will lean on Lahiru Udara’s tournament-leading run tally and the all-round threat of Wanindu Hasaranga and Moeen Ali, with Shaheen Shah Afridi adding overseas pace to a bowling attack that has struggled to contain Colombo Kaps this season.

Colombo Kaps vs Kandy Royals – Head-to-Head in LPL 2026

Colombo Kaps have dominated this rivalry in the 2026 Lanka Premier League, winning both league-stage meetings against Kandy Royals. They successfully chased down 180 in the first encounter before defending 192/8 in the second to complete a league double and carry the momentum into the playoffs.

Colombo Kaps secured a six-wicket victory in the first meeting on 19 July after chasing down 180, before following it up with a 24-run win on 23 July, restricting Kandy Royals to 168/8 while defending 193. Having won both league-stage clashes, Colombo will head into the knockout fixture with a psychological advantage over the Royals.

Players to Watch for Colombo Kaps vs Kandy Royals Eliminator

  • Kamindu Mendis (CLK) — Promoted to captain after Kusal Mendis’s injury, Mendis has steadied Colombo Kaps’ campaign and offers a genuine all-round threat in a knockout match.
  • Janith Liyanage (CLK) — Back-to-back half-centuries against Kandy Royals, including an unbeaten 53, make Liyanage the batter Colombo Kaps trust most under pressure.
  • James Neesham (CLK) — His all-round contributions, including an unbeaten 48 that sealed the first win over Kandy Royals, have been central to Colombo Kaps’ campaign.
  • Lahiru Udara (KAR) — The tournament’s leading run-scorer with 384 runs, Udara’s form at the top of the order is Kandy Royals’ best route to an upset.
  • Angelo Mathews (KAR) — The Kandy Royals captain has anchored the middle order throughout the season and brings knockout-match experience few in this squad can match.
  • Wanindu Hasaranga (KAR) — The all-rounder gives Kandy Royals a genuine wicket-taking option and late-innings hitting threat that could swing a tight contest.

Winner Prediction

Colombo Kaps arrive having won both meetings with Kandy Royals this season, with Janith Liyanage and James Neesham both in form under new captain Kamindu Mendis.

Kandy Royals have the individual talent, in Udara, Hasaranga and Mathews, to end that losing run when it matters most, but a side that has yet to beat this opponent all season starts as the underdog.

Colombo Kaps are the narrow favourites, with dew under lights likely to make chasing the preferred option for both sides.
